Sci-Fi Romances With People of Color?

There’s a lengthy discussion happening at Dear Author regarding, in part, the under-representation of ethnic characters in romance. After reading the post and comments, I started wondering what science fiction romance had to offer readers in terms of people of color.

Frequently, sci-fi romances feature alien heroes and heroines, which could be considered a variant on ethnicity, and there are androids such as in Catherine Asaro’s ALPHA, but what about non-alien human characters?

Off the top of my head, I came up with a short list:

IN ENEMY HANDS; WAR GAMES; A PIRATE'S PASSION; COMBAT; PRIME SUSPECT; "On Bliss" - KS Augustin
THIEF and the Onic Empire series - Anitra Lynn Mcleod
THE IRON DUKE – Meljean Brook
Various characters from Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series
QUEENIE’S BRIGADE – Heather Massey
THE SPIRAL PATH - Lisa Paitz Spindler
BLUE GALAXY - Diane Dooley
COLD WARRIORS - Claire Dargin
RAVYN'S AWAKENING - Sherri L. King
Xenogenesis series by Octavia E. Butler
COMPROMISED and PRIMAL (Bk 2 of her Lycan series) - Nathalie Gray
ARMAGEDDON - Kaitlyn O'Connor
CIMMERIAN CITY - Rae Lori
PHOENIX RISING - Corrina Lawson

I *know* there’s more out there, but I’m still getting over a cold and am drawing a fierce blank (except for my own book :P). I remember reading a title by Nathalie Gray that had a dark-skinned heroine, but for the life of me I can’t remember which one it is.

The fact that I had to essentially stop and think hard about the issue is rather unfortunate, especially considering that many sci-fi romances feature heavily populated settings (e.g., galactic empires, colonized worlds).

If you know of any SFR titles with non-alien POC characters, share them in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

Joyfully yours,

Heather
